Don't Risk Burnout - Take a Real Vacation Next Year
Home :: Travel & Leisure :: Travel Tips
By: Mary Ann Copson

Did you know:

Americans work an average of 9 weeks more per year than their European peers. Europeans typically take a full month off in the summer. The French like to take all of August off. This has not wrecked their economy.

People that can't seem to relax and renew on weekends have a higher long-term risk of dying from heart disease, a research study in Finland suggests. Men and women who said they "seldom" recovered from work fatigue and stress were about three times more likely to die of heart disease or stroke as workers who "almost always" recovered.

Other studies show that the increased stress and fatigue from working long hours and not taking time off can lead to weight gain, cardiovascular problems, chronic fatigue, depression and addiction to alcohol and depressants.

In the US, more than one-third of workers will take the office with them on vacation, according to a recent CareerBuilder.com survey. Sixteen percent of workers say their supervisors expect them to stay in touch while on vacation - 19 percent plan to check in voluntarily. Of these workers, 61 percent will be checking voicemail or email on a daily basis while on vacation.

The United States is the only industrialized country that does not have guaranteed four weeks paid vacation. Australia and Italy are the leaders in mandatory vacation with 6 weeks of paid vacation regardless of how long they have been employed.

The fastest growing economy in the world, China, provides workers three weeks off. They call vacation time "Golden Weeks."

American workers are expected to give back 574 million vacation days this year. (Expedia.com's annual vacation deprivation survey)

Only 39% of American families will take even a weeklong vacation next year.

Besides dramatically cutting the risk of heart disease, vacations have many other health benefit. Vacations can cure burnout and chronic stress. Time away from stressors restores depleted emotional resources and your sense of mastery and optimism. Studies also show that time off increases your positive moods and your initiative and competence. The more leisure activities you are involved in the higher your general satisfaction with Life.

But it takes two weeks for this to occur, so you need to have at least that much continuous time off to get the recuperative benefits.

It's not too late! Schedule next year's vacation now!

But that is still a long ways off. What can you do right now for rest, relaxation, and renewal?

Take a restorative break with:

a candlelight dinner with no TV

a walk (leave the iPod home)

really listening to your favorite music

sitting on the beach just watching the waves

visiting a forest for an hour of contemplation

playing a game with your kids

getting a massage

or soaking up the moonlight before retiring at night

Even small things like this can improve your health, happiness and productivity. Taking time out to nurture yourself is a personal choice and also has public policy implications for the productivity and well-being of the nation.

Choosing the Right Cruise Cabin
Home :: Travel & Leisure :: Travel Tips
By: Kyle Bruening

Choosing the right cruise cabin.  All cruise staterooms are designed to  be relaxing and comfortable to rest after your adventures.

Cabins

There are four basic types of cruise cabins: inside cabins, outside cabins, balcony cabins, and suites.  Cruise cabins offer luxurious suites to inside bunk-bed cabins, the choices are numerous.  Cruise cabins offer three types of views: inside (no window), window and balcony. Inside cruise ship cabins are comfortable, practical and peaceful, just like the outside cruise ship cabins, which have the added feature of a window or porthole
with sea view. Cruise cabins are much smaller than hotel rooms, so if you're worried about feeling claustrophobic or have more than two people sharing a room, you may want to consider booking two rooms or a suite.

The price of a cruise ship cabin or stateroom (the terms are interchangeable) is dependent on its size, layout, and location. For the most part, standard cruise cabins are sensibly decorated and offer comfortable beds, reading lamps, ample storage space, bathrooms that have either a shower (but no tub) or a small tub with shower, and individual climate control.  In addition, most cruise cabins come with a television, telephone, hair dryer, personal safe and a writing area with a desk and chair. staterooms have wall-to-wall carpeting, individually controlled airconditioning/heating, dresser or storage space, closet, telephone, and satellite television.  Some cruise cabins have VC Rs or DVD players, and some televisions also have radio/music channels.  If you book early you have the added advantage that you have the best choice of cruise cabins.

Staterooms with balconies have sliding glass doors, giving you access to the outside. Cruise cabins might appear small in size, but you will soon find all the luxuries you wanted properly fitted into the room.  Family-sized suites are cruise cabins for more than two people are harder or impossible to find the later you book.

While inside cruise cabins are the least expensive, they have no windows and are often quite small. Cruise ship cabins vary from smallish, economical inside cabins to elaborate penthouse suites, with everything in between.  All cruise cabins are created for comfort with a sensible design where you can move with ease. Cruise
ship cabins are not all created equal; however, they are all designed for comfort, convenience, and practicality.

While most cruise ship cabins are insulated quite well, residual noise can be a problem in high-traffic areas. Most cruise ship cabins have in-room safes, which is where you will want to store your passport when you are on-board the ship.  Most cruise ship cabins are built to accommodate two passengers. Please remember that cruise ship cabins tend to be smaller than hotel rooms and therefore, as space can be limited it is worth bringing only those items which you know will need.

Luxury Staterooms

There are several grades of cruise ship cabins on each cruise ship. These lovely Luxury staterooms offer a king size bed, balcony with loungers and tables and a bathroom with bath and shower.  Luxury staterooms also have hot tubs and several extra luxuries. Larger luxury staterooms offer over-sized balconies some with hot tubs. Luxury cabins may offering custom Italian down bedding & Italian linens, European white goose feather beds & pillows, Atrium playground with projection theater screen, Cable or Satellite TV, Turkish towels, central Heat & Air, exclusive European soaps and a butler.

Conclusion

Nonetheless, all cruise cabins are not created equal. The best advice is to be informed about cruise cabin and make the right decision for you.

What Is Fun in Tulum, Mexico?
Home :: Travel & Leisure :: Travel Spot
By: Deanna Robinson

My 12 yr. old daughter has written an article about her experience with her Dad on vacation on an excursion to Tulum, Mexico. They rode ATV's, snorkeled in a cenote, swam with dolphins, zip-lined in the jungle and had great fun!

Adventure exists all over the world, especially in the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. In the summer of 2007, my family and I decided to take a break and travel to Tulum, a small town on the Mayan Riviera famous for it's ancient pyramids and beautiful beaches. We stayed in a bungalow on the beach, relaxed, and took in some of the local activities. During my vacation in Tulum, I had many wonderful experiences that changed my opinion of what fun really is.

Two activities that I found very exciting were four-wheeling and snorkeling in a cenote near some Mayan ruins. This took place on a scorching hot afternoon in the middle of July, deep in the verdant jungle of the Yucatan Peninsula. Surprisingly, this was actually only a short drive from our hotel. Following a quick lesson from our instructor, Hector, on how to operate an All Terrain Vehicle (ATV), we were on our way into the jungle on a rocky, dusty trail. It was the first time I had operated an ATV all by myself, so, despite the dust, bugs, and exhaust fumes, I felt free and independent. After a challenging ride through the jungle past some ancient ruins, we arrived at the mid-point of the trail. From here, we hiked down a more narrow path, crowded by trees, vines and underbrush - a little spooky! At the end of the walking path, we came to the gigantic cenote, which is a sinkhole filled with crystal-clear water. Hector said, "just dive right in and see how refreshing the water is!" So, we grabbed our snorkeling gear and quickly jumped in. Almost immediately after my skin touched the sparkling water, I realized Hector's true definition of "refreshing" - COLD! Ignoring the frigid temperature, I put my face into the "refreshing" water and my eyes were filled with amazement. I could see stalagmites and stalactites, plus all sorts of fish and plants. It was like a huge aquarium. We swam all around and explored this underground cave, and, just when my toes were turning blue, Hector informed us that it was time to head back. After some quick pictures, we hiked back to the ATVs and rode back to the starting point. All the way back, I was thinking about how great the afternoon had been.

On another day of the vacation, we went zip-lining, which is gliding high above the jungle floor on a thick cable. The rider is strapped into a harness which connects to a pulley that rolls along a cable stretched between two high platforms. It was an exhilarating experience, especially since I am afraid of heights! This adventure began with an early morning ride into the jungle, followed by a bike ride to the first platform. A new guide, not Hector, gave us helmets and harnesses. She also explained how to use a crooked tree branch as a brake if we wanted to slow down while on the cable. When it was my turn, I hooked my harness to the cable and grabbed my brake stick. My knees trembled and my heart pumped fast. I was so scared, I forgot to unhook my safety clip from the tower rail. The guide unhooked me and said, "push!" I could hear my dad cheering me on. Reluctantly, I pushed off with my feet and began my first glide. When I looked around, I could hardly believe my eyes. I was flying high above the tall trees and rocky terrain, and the dense jungle stretched as far as I could see. It was so exciting, I forgot all about being scared of heights. Before long, I arrived at the end, and, using my tree branch to slow me down, made a near-perfect landing on the second platform. After that first ride, I couldn't wait to experience the remaining zip-lines. When we were done, we swam in another cenote - BONUS! After enjoying a lunch in the jungle prepared by native Mayans, we traveled back to the hotel and rested in hammocks on the beach, a perfect end to a perfect day.

Being a person who adores animals of all sorts, I especially enjoyed my final adventure in Tulum, swimming with dolphins! This event occurred at an outdoor aquarium, where I was part of a tour group. Most, including myself, had never touched a dolphin, so we prepared to get to know them. While waiting near the water, I saw two slick dorsal fins pierce the surface of the water, creating silent ripples that followed two gray shapes in the water. The dolphins, Lula and Jack, soon swam up and I quickly fell in love. They were so adorable, with gleaming eyes and gentle faces. All I could think about was the fun ahead. When it was my turn in line, Jack, a white-tipped dolphin, stretched out his flippers and gave me a big hug. Then, he gave me a big wet kiss right on the lips! Next, the guide told me to swim out into the open water and wait there with my arms spread out. Quickly, the two dolphins appeared on each side of me, waiting for me to grab their dorsal fins. I grasped their fins and they swam forward, pulling me through the water. After the ride, I was tingling with excitement, knowing the best was yet to come. I again swam out into open water and waited, this time with my arms and legs spread out. I stiffened my legs and soon felt the dolphins begin to push me with their snouts, faster and faster. Suddenly, I rose up out of the water, gliding along, propelled by two dolphin engines under my feet! It was a fantastic feeling. The Mayan Riviera is a beautiful place to visit and it also a great place to pursue new adventures such as four-wheeling, snorkeling in cenotes, zip-lining and even swimming with real dolphins. I feel very lucky to have experienced these activities while there on vacation. Such activities are not part of my every-day events, are very were more exciting and special than the things I normally consider to be fun. One could even say that getting to participate in these activities changed my idea of what fun really is.

How to find Affordable Cruises and Discount Last Minute Cruises
Home :: Travel & Leisure :: Travel Tips
By: Gabriel Killian

If you've ever gone on a cruise before on one of the many major cruise lines then you know the beauty and wonder they provide and the sense of being free and the enjoyment of sheer relaxation and pleasure. Cruises can quite possibly be the ultimate means of vacation anywhere around the world. The problem , however, with most cruises is that they can be rather expensive and tough on the pocket book. Below are ways to make sure you stay within your budget and save tons of money the next time you go on a cruise.

1. Find last minute cruises. Last minute cruises as the name implies are scheduled to depart fairly soon. In order to fill places on the cruise ship, cruise lines often find it reasonable to discount fare significantly thus providing you, the consumer with cheap tickets for your cruise. This works significantly to your advantage in regards of getting extremely affordable tickets among the best, most luxurious of cruise lines.

2. Choose Discount Cruises. Discount Cruises are like a cruise deal in which the line is making a significant temporary price reduction or special in order to attract business and generate revenue. Again this often works extremely well for the individual wanting to make sure they get on at an extremely inexpensive price. Like with the last minute cruises, you must strike while the iron is flaming hot. These specials usually don't last that long and it is very important to jump at the chance when you see fit.

3. Use a service to find cheap cruises. There are a plethora of resources that can and will find you the most affordable cruise for whatever it is you want to do. Whether it is cruising the Carribbean or travelling through Europe , these services are available to help you find the most affordable cruises and often guarantee them at the lowest price. Look below for some resources that may be able to help you with such.

4. Choose your cruise line and cruises wisely. Dependent on where you go and who you go through, cruises can range from thousands of dollars to just over a hundred bucks. So if you are looking for a cruise that fits your pocket book then act accordingly. But be advised, sometimes you get what you pay for and sometimes you get more. Just make sure to review the cruise line you are considering and read about your trip first.

These are just a short few of the numerous ways you can save big on your next cruise. Whether its last minute cruises or a discount cruise line, there is a way to make sure that you get that vacation you've always wanted, and the rest and relaxation you deserve. It pays to shop wisely and be a smart consumer. Many accomodations such as these are considered luxuries so the prices often coincide.

10 Tips For Cutting Cruise Costs
Home :: Travel & Leisure :: Travel Tips
By: Anne Campbell

While the economy is unstable and we may think about eliminating our vacation, cruise line CEO's report that their industry is still going great.

The reason? A cruise is one of the best travel deals you can find: some 80% of your travel costs are included in the price of the cruise ticket, including a stateroom, mountains of food and entertainment.

Add to that, the popularity of "homeland cruising",departing from a nearby port instead of flying to board a ship. For example, in 2007, roughly one million people opted to take a New York cruise from Manhattan, Brooklyn and Cape Liberty (Bayonne), NJ.

The internet has turned travelers into intrepid bargain hunters seeking the very best deal possible, I'm passing along my tips for cutting cruise costs even further.

1. A terrific travel agent is critical to getting the best deals. He or she can steer you to another, in many cases, better ship and show you a discount you didn't even know about. Travel agents know when bargains become available before the public. The best way to find a terrific agent is to ask for referrals, as you would a doctor, lawyer or anyone in a service business.

2. Whenever a great deal on a cruise pops up, pounce! Sometimes a few staterooms are available a month before departure and these will go in a nanosecond

3. Run "cruise travel agent" in Google and you'll pull up hundreds of travel agencies. Sign up for weekly bargain newsletters from a bunch of them.

4.Know what a bargain is and is not. For example, cabin upgrades rarely are: today, cabins are standard in size and amenities and cruise lines will only upgrade you in the category you're already booked in. Free gratuities and/or onboard credit will save money.

5.Cruise during the shoulder season. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, ships are normally full of families. Peak season for Canada/New England cruises is September and October. You'll find the best prices outside these periods

6.Cut down, or eliminate, the cruise line's shore excursions, which are over-priced. You can arrange the same excursions on your by visiting the port's web site. For example, one cruise line offered a one-day Budget car rental for $70. By going directly to Budget, I got the same deal for $30.

7.Repositioning cruises are the very best deal of all. While a few ships sail year round from New York, most change cruising seasons in March and October/November.

8.I know it's fun to buy new clothes for a cruise, but do you really need anything? If the answer is "yes", then buy it on EBAY or head for your local discount store.

9.If you live outside the New York metropolitan area and plan to drive to New York or Brooklyn, check out alternative transportation such as Amtrak or bus service. Not only is driving in New York a nightmare, but gasoline keeps climbing and parking is very expensive.

10.Before departing, decide which on-board expenses are unnecessary. Today cruise lines get the bulk of their revenue from onboard purchases so they push the spa, art auctions and other revenue generating areas. Do you really need more T-shirts? I've eliminated massages since they're never as good as what I'll get in New York and cruise ship spas charge 40% more.
